The time of year has finally arrived – the office party! If this is your first year working within the company, the office party can be a nerve-wracking experience, and many people make the mistake of drinking far too much to alleviate nerves and going a bit overboard! There are many ways to make sure that your first office party goes smoothly – after all you don’t want your first Christmas party to be remembered for the wrong reasons!
Planning is one of the most important things you can do, especially if you are feeling nervous. Finding out the venue, dress code and any other information that you need to know in good time is important – that way you can get a taxi booked early (taxi companies get booked up quickly and are very busy at this time of the year, so get your booking in as soon as possible).
It will also give you time to plan your outfit – if you need a new ballgown for a lavish black-tie ceremony, or a more casual, but still smart shirt, such as men’s designer shirts from Farah shirts – you will have plenty of time to make sure you are looking your best. Remember looking good and feeling comfortable will make you feel much more confident.
When you arrive, don’t shy away and hide from people. Christmas parties are a good way to bond with other members of your team and can put you in a good light with your manager. Talk to people about activities outside work, such as hobbies, what they are up to on the weekend or sports. People like to talk about themselves, and this can get the conversation flowing and help you to feel a lot more relaxed.
When it comes to drinking, the temptation is huge at this time of the year, and if you are feeling nervous, trying to take the edge off with a few drinks is very tempting. Remember, you are still at work in a way – being around colleagues and superiors you need to watch your actions more – this is not the same as a night in the pub with a group of mates! Eating before drinking is a sensible thing to do and keep an eye on how much you are drinking as the night goes on is important. It is easy to get carried away, especially if you are having a good time, but do be careful as you may end up doing something that you regret.
